3 Gum Symptoms To Watch For

womancoveringmouthblondelobWhen your tooth hurts, you know it’s probably a good idea to call us. When a sore shows up and it doesn’t go away, you know scheduling an appointment is essential. However, how much do you know about gum disease symptoms and whether a change requires a phone call and a visit? The brief version of our advice follows: If something changes with your gums, give us a call right away. As for the types of abnormalities that may surface (which act as warnings signs that you might need immediate care), we have a few examples!

Symptom #1: Change In Color

When you take a look at your gums in the mirror when they are in good health, they will display a soft pink color. However, if gum disease is affecting your oral health, you may notice that the shade shifts to something more along the lines of a red color or you may even notice a purple appearance. Call us immediately to protect your smile.

Symptom #2: Change In Volume

Healthy gums lie against your teeth and look flat when compared with the inflammation that takes place with gum disease. If your gums feel or look puffed up, we encourage you to let us know. It’s a common sign that you need immediate attention.

Symptom #3: Bleeding

If you bite into a chip and the sharp part slides into your gum tissue, this can cause bleeding as the result of a small cut. If it heals, you’re in good shape. However, if you find that your gums bleed when you brush them and/or when you floss them, it’s a good idea to call us. Bleeding is often a sign that gum disease is underway.
